Alcohol poisoning is the term used when someone has drunk so much alcohol that the blood level of ethanol rises high enough to be medically dangerous and life threatening. One typical “drink” of beer, wine, or liquor raises an average teenager’s blood alcohol level to 25 mg/dL.
Four drinks raise the level to 100 mg/dL (the usual legal definition of intoxication), which produces mental confusion, slowed reaction time, and stomach upset (nausea and vomiting). Blood levels above 300 mb/dL result in severe uncoordination, double vision, and stupor. Levels above 500 mg/dL cause coma, liver failure and life-threatening respiratory depression. That means you can stop breathing and die. That is alcohol poisoning.
It takes 60 minutes for the body to absorb and metabolize the alcohol in one drink. SO the risk-taker who “chugs” down a pint or more of liquor in a short period of time can easily become alcohol poisoned. This is a toxicological emergency.
Every year there are adolescent deaths reported from acute alcohol poisoning, an event that usually occurred at parties where hazing, dares, or show-off behavior took place. Underage drinking (usually under age 21) is illegal. If you are a teen, remember that good friends don’t let friends drink.
